Local Playgrounds + Some worth driving to

I've broken this section up into all the local playgrounds in our immediate area. I've also noted which are fenced in and made some notes about littles vs bigger kids. I know when I have both kids with me at this young age it's important to find something where I can make sure a gate is shut behind us! 

Local Spots

Totally fenced in, decent parking, right on the lake and good for littles and siblings. There are swing sets, spring riders, a seesaw and multiple climbing structures. Wood chips.

This one is mostly fenced in, the age recommendation is 3+ but we went when my kids were just walking. Wood chips. Tons of parking. Tennis court, big fields surrounded by woods.

This is a large playground right on the lake but without a fence. There are multiple large climbing structures, smaller ones for littles and tons of swings. Wood chips.

Melrose: Melrose Common

This all fenced play area has a few different parts to it. There is a large rubbery tot friendly section, with small swings and lots of climbing. A fenced in small track for biking and scooting. Lots of shaded areas for sitting and playing. There is also a larger play structure for the bigger kids.

This is a cute little area and also always filled with discarded (usable) toys. Each week there seems to be a new trike/scooter/truck to play with. There is a small play structure with multiple slides. Woods chips/grass and all fenced in.

If you park at the Wakefield HS/Voc school and follow the paved path into the woods about 3/4 of a mile there is a little playground. It's next to the lake, there are picnic areas and swings.

Decent options for toddlers and older kids: good swings, rope climbing structure, picnic area and the playground is fully fenced in.

This park is located just behind Main Street (near Felton Place) it's fully fenced in with  wood chips surround the play structures and swing

There's a woodchip playground with swings, benches and picnic tables. On one side of the play-area sits a tee-ball field and on the other lies a basketball court.

Newly renovated with a great play structures. Small neighborhood park, that's fully fenced in with a mix of grass, wood chips and rubber based footing.   Structures include balance logs, swings, tire swing and slides.

Decent amount of parking, lots of climbing and slides, swings. This is not fenced in and has wood chips. There is also a basketball court and a hilly/wooded trail to the top of JJ Round. It's surrounded by grassy fields.

Big and fenced in and with lots of parking. This playground is good for kids of all ages, it's spread out and offers littles a small structure and a separate one for big kids. It is near a BMX track, so check ahead for events if you don't want to hear that in the background.

Neighborhood playground with basketball courts. The play area is fully fenced in and has a tire swing, climbing structure for bigger kids, small baby swings, and play tower w/ a slide. It's also partially shaded.

Mostly fenced in park with lots of fun climbing areas for littles. Shaded picnic area, swings, paved paths which are great for biking/scooting, lots of shade and a basketball court. It is right behind the Holland Memorial Pool. Street parking.

If you park near the ranger station entrance and walk up the hill, there is a playground on top of the hill next to the pond. There are swings, picnic areas and climbing structures. The whole area is covered in fairly deep sand. There are walking trails nearby (paved/wooded).

Lincoln Commons is a 4.3 acre public park located on the site of the former Lincoln Elementary School in Malden.  It features open green space, biking trails, picnic benches, shade, and an open play ground with several newer climbing structures.

Newman Park is located next to the Ferryway School. It has a softball field, soccer field and a playground area. It's fenced in.

A small fenced in playground with wood chips, a small picnic area, a "track" that runs around the playground. Some small climbing structures and slides. Decent for active littles.

A small fenced in neighborhood park next to a neighborhood dog park. A few climbing structures and some swings, a recently an expanded playground with new play equipment, ball field dugouts, benches, picnic tables

Malden: Devir Park

Devir Park is one of Malden's largest parks with Baseball and Softball Fields, Basketball Courts, Fenced Playground. Soccer Field, and tennis courts. A revitalization plan has been discussed.

Across from the Stone Zoo, this is a great spot for littles because it has lots to see. There are two climbing structures, slides, swings, spring riders, a sandbox, a large field, trails behind the park that are easy and lead throughout the fells.

Newly rebuild playground on Broadway and MacArthur with structures for little and big, mostly fenced in.create two play areas, for ages 2-5 and 5-12, a picnic area, benches, playspace, rehabilitated T-ball area.

A great play space for littles, commonly called "Munchkin park" with lots of ramps, climbing, imaginative play and swings. Fully fenced. Located behind the town hall.

There are lots of slides and a climbing structure, swings, and a basketball court. This park is  fenced, the sand was reprealced with wood chips. There are also paved paths to ride your bike around. Near Starbucks on Fresh Pond.

This one has a newer splashed, as well as  slides, climbing structures of various sizes, several different kinds of swings for different ages and abilities, tennis court, basketball

A really big park that is mostly fenced in! This one has lots of ramps and climbing structures for littles, swings of various sizes and a large play structure for the bigger kids.There are also fields surrounding it so you can watch tennis and baseball fields.

This is another goodie for littles. This is fully fenced in with a rubber ground, little climbing structures, climbing ropes for bigger children, swings, slides and a large field with tennis courts. There are also wooded trails nearby.

160 Chestnut Street is a  "Kid Spot" playground,  with three soccer fields, a softball field, and a basketball court. The Kids Zone has a Jungle gym, see-saw, slides, and swings and climbing structures and picnic tables. Not Fenced..

Small park with a beach volleyball court, sandbox, a very tall slide (at least 10 feet) , a merry-go-round. Plenty of picnic tables and shade.  Equipment is a little older, the pond is the draw.

Open area for picnics,  small but decent playground equipment, tennis/pickleball court, basketball court, and play area for kids. Beware the goose poo.

There's lots of space to run and the play, the  equipment is good for younger children with a few climbing structures, swings and it's  nice and shaded. It's mostly fenced in. There is a basketball court and large field.

A mostly fenced in playground with an area for tennis courts, basketball court and field. The small playground has slides, swings, climbing structure. Free parking.

Hickey Park has a tot lot, basketball court, baseball diamond. The tot lot is fenced in and has swings and a grassy area, climbing structures and a sand box.

Fully fenced with a lot of fun climbing structures, swings and slide. Some decent shade in the sun! It's also near the park which gives a large flat space for littles to run, but is also fenced. This park is over 4 acres and also has basketball courts and a baseball diamond.

This small neighborhood park is tucked away, not fully fenced and very shaded. It has a lot of newer climbing structures for older kids, slides, and a basketball court.

A smaller and fully fenced in playground with the basics: slides, climbing structures and swings. There is a good amount of green space for kids to run and it s mostly shaded.

Located along the banks of the Mystic River, this park has walking trails and athletic areas, including five tennis courts and a basketball court. There is a fully fenced playground with signs and various climbing structures, picnic tables and green space.

A really large fenced in playground with multiple climbing structures and swings located within the Farm. There are picnic areas and animals to see!

This one is easy to get too, has lots of parking and space to run around. There are a few climbing structures, a giant net, swings, basketball court, soccer fields, skate ramps and a flat paved track great for littles to scoot and bike

Lynnfield: Glen Meadow

Fully enclosed play area. There are a couple different structures,  one for littles and one for bigger kid plus a saucer swing, climber and spinning cups, as well as a  basketball court, tennis court, mini-basketball half court, and baseball field

Follow the commuter rail parking lot road all the way back until you hit the field. It can be tricky to find. The park is fully fenced, with ride on toys, swings, different levels of play structures for the younger kids but probably not as fun for the bigger kids. A mix of sand and wood chips, picnic tables and benches.  A little league field. Plenty of parking.

Renovated a few years ago, this park is fully accessible and features swings, multiple slides, a seesaw, and climbing structures, as well as shade trees, picnic tables,  basketball court, a bathroom, tee-ball field and walking track. There is also off street parking.

Only a few years old, Yentile  has lots to do and plenty of trails that loop around the park. There is plenty of parking and  four separate areas for different ages. The park also has restrooms and a pavilion and basketball courts..

A great playground if you're looking for a pretty large splash pad that has climbing rocks. The park itself is nice with a few play structures of different sizes. There are also walking trails (stroller friendly), a stream and ample benches and picnic areas. parking is tricky, but there are some off-street spots.

This one has a  variety of play spaces for a wide range of ages, including the massive castele like play structure with different heights and slides. Three are great swings for littles and a few smaller climbing areas as well, plus some musical instruments and tires to climb.. There is a small zipline for the bigger kids, a field to play in. The ground is wood chips. Parking is at the school.

Parking is the only drawback at this park, but if you plan accordingly you can spend a few hours here. There is a large playground with a variety of play structures and equipment for all sizes. There is also a water feature and it is all fenced off. The park itself sits along a nice path with views of zakim bridge, nearby trains coming into North Station. There is a skateboard park, picnic area a grassy area to picnic at.

This is relatively new and thoughtfully designed.  Parking is free and always available. There are sprinklers and fountains. The play area has all kinds of climbing frames, unique climbing structures, musical instruments, paved paths, swings, spinning equipment, lots of  benches and some shaded areas. This is fully enclosed and there are a mix of rubbery grounds + wood chips.

Arlington: Robins Farm Park

This small but fun park has lots of space to run and one of the biggest slides I've seen. The play equipment is not fenced, but it's not near a super busy street. There's a big grassy hill which has views of the Boston skyline (also has paved paths for strollers). This is across the street from the Brackett School., lots  of on-street parking is available. Also a great place to sled!

Arlington: Robins Farm Park

This is located in the Navy Yard and next to Spaulding Rehab. Parking is onstreet unless you want to pay for the Spaulding garage. The park is new, designed with full accessibility in mind and has tons of climbing structures for all ages. It's also right on the Mystic so there is lots of boat traffic to watch. It's also fully fenced in. Downside is that there is not a ton of shade on a hot day.

This is a great place for the bigger kids (2+). The whole park is enclosed and hilly and made of  rubbery ground. There is a pirate ship, climbing hill and spider web, open and enclosed slides and tons of shade. The park is located right next to the Childrens museum along fort point. Parking is difficult, try for a meter nearby or one of the many garages.

It has a variety of play features to stimulate challenging physical activity as well as creative, exploratory, imaginative and social play for kids of all ages. Boston, Brighton: Artensani Playground

This mostly shaded park pithing the Boston Common near Frog Pond (Beacon Hill side) is great for littles who love climbing. There are lots of slides, it's fully fenced in and has a splashed nearby. Parking can be tricky, if you're trying for on street but there is a Boston Common Garage just below.

This is a goodone to venture too on a warm summer day. The downside is that it's not very shaded so the play equipment does get hot. There are lots of climbing structures for bigger kids, big slides and a toddler spraydeck. There is also a small wading pool and best of all for kids who are trying to eat everything - no wood chips.
