EXPLORE THE WOODS IN NH & ME

Good for littles

  1. Sabbady Falls in Waterville Valley, NH:  short, boardwalks, woods and falls
  2. Lost River Gorge, North Woodstock, NH: waterfalls, woods, wildlife, boardwalks and caves. Can feel $$ if you dont plan to spend a few hours.
  3. Jack’s Pond, Hancock NH: little bridges, wood carvings, easy and not too steep
  4. Shaw Cherry Hill Farm,Gorham, Maine: mostly flat, bridges, carved animals  
  5. Saco Heath Preserve, Saco, ME:  mostly flat, boardwalks, short
  6. Ferry Beach State Park, Saco, ME : nature center, view of miles of white sand beach, picnic area, changing rooms, fee due for 
  7. Great Bay Discovery Center Boardwalk, Greenland, NH: parts are stroller friendly, beaches, woods, playground
  8. Odiorne Point State Par, Rye, NH: stroller friendly sections, beaches, woods, marsh, tide pools and a touch tank and aquarium, pay to park, restrooms
  9. Fort Foster Loop, Kittery Paine, ME: stroller friendly, beaches, woods, marsh
  10. Field of Dreams Park and Playground, Salem, NH: Wooded park featuring a large playground, hiking trails & picnic table, summer concerts
  11. Adams Point WMA, Dover, NH: park at the laboratory and walk the loop around the peninsula
  12. Winnie The Pooh Trail, Barrington, NH: less than a mile, the meandering trail follows a path over the bridge and to various characters homes. Inside Goodwill Conservation Area. 

Local-ish HIKES WORTH THE DRIVE

Good for littles

  1. Hellcat Interpretive Trail at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Newburyport, MA: marsh, dune, and maritime forest, boardwalk, observation towers, the handicap-accessible Pine Trail, and several more wildlife viewing areas provide places to enjoy wildlife. fee to park, check the website for green head fly updates.
  2. Walden Pond State Reservation Trails, Lincoln, MA: 102-foot deep glacial pond, hiking trails travel around the pond,  a replica of Thoreau's cabin, relatively easy trail. fee to park.
  3. Maudslay State Park, Newburyport: a number of different trails, small fee to park. formerly a private estate along the Merrimack River. 
  4. Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, Topsfield 12 miles of interconnecting trails,  a vernal pool, an observation tower, along boardwalks, up a drumlin, and on top of an esker and a must visit to the Rockery. Fee to park as it's owned by Mass Audubon.
  5. Weir Hill, North Andover: 4 miles of easy hiking,  includes more than a mile of scenic shoreline on Lake Cochichewick
  6. Halibut Point Reservation Easy hiking trails lead to scenic vistas, a low rocky coastal shelf with impressive crashing waves, and interesting tide pools. Parking is tricky. The walk is fairly easy, but not really stroller friendly.
  7. Goose Cove Reservation, Gloucester: easy hiking through tidal mud flats, wooded upland, and rocky shoreline.
